Back in 2014 we were approached by Société 2015 to register our business as a member prior to the 2015 UCI Road World Championships. We didn’t really know what that meant at the time, but we like bikes, cool people and publicity – and their logo was slick – so we signed up.
As we did a bit more research, we got a better handle on what Société 2015 was all about, how it relates to the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, and how that all affects and interacts with Richmond and the city’s businesses. We began to get increasingly excited about the opportunity to be a part of such an historic event for our hometown, and how we might tie in our passion for great coffee to the upcoming championships.
Enter Kevin Benjamin. Kevin is part of the team bringing the UCI Worlds to Richmond and, to our surprise, had become a fast fan of Blanchard’s Coffee Roasting Co. after ordering coffee from our website based on our membership with Société 2015. Kevin began stopping by the BCRC Roast Lab on every Richmond visit and we soon began to bounce around ideas of how Blanchard’s might be able to tie in great coffee and the biggest cycling event the city has ever seen.
As the months passed, we began to hone our ideas into something tangible – a truly special coffee release that exemplifies both the core values of UCI, and Blanchard’s continuing commitment to roasting the very best, sustainable, community-driven craft coffee. In a slow brushstroke of serendipity, we stumbled upon one of the loveliest coffees we’ve ever had the pleasure of roasting at about the same time UCI approached us about using some of their graphics in our packaging – things were coming together.
On a whim, with a coffee, an upcoming event, a plan, but no packaging, we approached Richmond’s prestigious Martin Agency and asked if they’d be interested in helping us embody all of the ideas we had swarming around this project in a simple coffee bag. To our surprise, they said yes. Two weeks later we were sending bags off to production and driving to our farm connection to pick up fresh harvest coffee for the project.
With that, we are incredibly proud to officially introduce the Blanchard’s Coffee Roasting Co. 2015 UCI World Championships Special Release: Finca El Ocaso, Quindio, Colombia.
We couldn’t be more proud of the entirety of this project. From the relationship with Kevin and UCI, to the branding and package from The Martin Agency, to our direct trade relationship with Finca El Ocaso, to the absolutely delicious coffee in the cup – this is one of those rare projects that comes together about as close to perfectly as possible.
Because of the depth of thought, creativity and planning that went into this project, and the stories behind the coffee, relationships and work that went into getting it to this point, we will be featuring different aspects of this project’s evolution in the coming weeks as Richmond continues to prepare for the best cyclists in the world, and all of their fans, to pay a visit.
We hope you’re as excited about the 2015 UCI World Road Championships, and this beautiful cup of coffee, as we are. Do yourself a favor and grab a bag, and stay tuned for the next part of our series coming next week.
