This is a very special coffee that is the product of great work done on Idjwi Island to help families affected by conflict in the DRC and Rwanda. We encourage you to watch the video above and hear the story of all the great work Good Grounds is doing, and what this coffee means to the island.
The coffee itself is a delicious, rich, complex coffee that is indicative of the region. Deeper notes of sweet dried cranberries, chutney, and brown sugar create a boisterous cup that lingers on the palate.
A quick note: coffee from this region of Africa is prone to something known as "potato defect". This is a harmless, undetectable fungus that can grow on coffee seeds, and manifests as a somewhat potato-like flavor and/or aroma when the coffee is brewed. There is less than a one in ten chance of encountering this defect, and it generally will come from just one coffee bean, so it may only appear in one brew from a specific bag. Most people are never lucky/unlucky enough to experience this (the flavor is more or less offensive, depending your palate), but if you do encounter it, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll happily replace your bag with another.
