Doña Gloria, lovingly named for the matron of the Reyes family, produces, in our opinion, the finest quality coffee on the Finca San Jose de las Nubes estate. Because of our close partnership with the Reyes brothers, we were able to isolate this microlot from the rest of the harvest with the intention of offering it as a special release.
In January of 2017, the Blanchard's Coffee Roasting Co. team traveled together to Matagalpa, Nicaragua to spend four days following this year's harvest from the hillsides of Finca San Jose, to the cupping table at the dry mill. For many members of the team, this was their first visit to Finca San Jose, or any coffee farm; for others, it was a homecoming of sorts. For everyone, the trip was deeply meaningful, and not only brought us closer to the coffee we love, but also brought us closer together as a team.
We decided the best way to share our experiences was a travel log in pictures captured during our time in Nicaragua. BCRC Photographers and Designers, Cameron Lewis and Jacob Melton produced a beautiful, sixty five page photographic journal documenting the team's journey. We've paired this with our special release of the Doña Gloria Microlot while supplies last.
The Finca San Jose Estate is situated just north of Matagalpa in North-Central Nicaragua. This area is the most desirable coffee farming land in Nicaragua due to its altitude and climate diversity. The topography creates numerous microclimates that allow single hillsides to have distinct growing conditions conducive to many different coffee varietals and a wide range of results within those varietals. Finca San Jose is divided into four sectors, each producing different results, allowing us to source specific sectors to isolate specific flavor characteristics.
At the cupping table, the Blanchard's Coffee Roasting Co. team found a much more pronounced pear and tart peach character in the Doña Gloria, while still maintaining Finca San Jose's signature graham cracker sweetness and body. We found the coffee to have a vibrant, floral acidity - balanced with a rich, chocolatey body that leads to an excellent, well balanced, dynamic cup.
