The Legend of Black Dog is a staple of Richmond, Virginia folklore. It is hard to parse truth from fiction when it comes to accounts of Black Dog, a stray that roamed neighborhoods in the West End of Richmond for years. Some people considered Black Dog a protector - a benevolent watchman - others viewed him a scourge that needed to be captured and put down. Everyone agrees he was a wild, free-spirit that avoided capture or domestication despite countless attempts by city animal control and countless residents of the neighborhoods he roamed. Writer, Mark Holmberg, once described Black Dog this way:
Black Dog treats humans as if they were fire, getting close enough for warmth — even occasionally licking the feet of children — but never allowing himself to be touched.
We can't help but admire the legendary Black Dog's wild heart and free spirit. It was that heart and spirit we thought of when naming our unique blend of Ethiopian coffees. Ethiopian coffees are known for wild, exotic, fruit-forward flavors and citrusy, floral aroma.
At the cupping table, the Blanchard's Coffee Roasting Co. team gets a wide range of fruit flavors from Black Dog. There are pronounced notes of Blueberry and citrus, which often combines with a slight herbaceous note that presents somewhat like mango. Despite so many intense flavors, the coffee is balanced with a pleasant, sweet complexity.
Black Dog is a very versatile coffee. We have found that people just looking for a simple, enjoyable cup of coffee appreciate the sweetness and body, while more experienced coffee drinkers appreciate the complex fruit notes. The complexity will be highlighted by hand pour methods like Hario V60 or Kalita Wave, while the body and sweetness will be more pronounced in traditional drip coffee brewers or immersion brewers like a French Press or AeroPress.
We recommend a 1:16 ratio of coffee to water for hand pour methods and a 1:15 ratio of coffee to water for drip brewers and French Press.
