Kayu PB
Nestled in the heart of Murang’a County's Rwatha subregion, Kayu Coffee Factory has been a cornerstone of the local coffee community since its founding in 1964. Situated at 1650 meters above sea level, this factory spans 7 acres of volcanic red soil, offering a rich growing environment for coffee. With 1,191 active members, Kayu serves several nearby villages, including Kayu, Njumbi, Rwathia, and Mihuti. Known for its unique position between coffee and tea-growing zones, the factory's production cycles align with the area’s biannual rainfall pattern, allowing for two distinct harvest seasons from March to May and October to December. Its commitment to sustainability is reflected in its efforts to manage wastewater through eco-friendly soaking pits, ensuring the protection of the surrounding environment.
The farm itself thrives in a lush, indigenous tree-filled landscape, with small family-owned farms (ranging from 1-2 hectares) tending the coffee plants. Local farmers adhere to the best agronomic practices, with regular training and advice from the Coffee Research Station and agricultural experts. After harvest, the coffee undergoes careful wet processing, utilizing a pulping system and recirculation tanks powered by the nearby Kagondo River. Despite the challenges posed by education and youth migration, there remains a strong belief in the potential of coffee as a sustainable business for future generations. Kayu’s unwavering focus on quality, alongside the community's dedication, helps preserve both the tradition and economic promise of coffee farming in this beautiful region.
