Arbegona

Nestled high in the mountains of Ethiopia’s Sidamo region, Arbegona is a community deeply rooted in coffee. Within this woreda lies the Bochessa kebele, home to a relatively new but thriving washing station built in 2022. Since then, over 800 smallholder farmers deliver their harvests here, where cherries are carefully pulped, fermented, and washed before drying on raised beds.

The land here is rich, and fertilization is rare, with many farmers opting to grow their coffee under the canopy of false banana trees, a traditional method that supports both soil health and shade. Accessing the farms isn’t easy; many are only reachable by foot, horse, or motorcycle.

Coffee is the heart of Arbegona’s economy and culture. Most families have been growing coffee for generations, and while opportunities can be limited, many young people choose to stay—continuing the work of their parents, contributing to their community, and perfecting their craft.

This washed lot from Bochessa is a reflection of that dedication. It’s clean and expressive, with vibrant acidity, floral aromatics, and a structured sweetness that speaks to the high elevations and careful processing. A true taste of spring, playful and full of life.
