A little more than a decade ago, we decided that if we were going to produce a dark roast, it would have to follow the same rules we set for our lighter, single origin coffees. It must be balanced, have discernible sweetness, complexity, and a pleasant finish. So often, roasters don't focus on these characteristics when roasting darker roasts and the result is one dimensional, burnt coffee. Dark as Dark is complex, sweet, and balanced, leaving you craving another cup.
At the cupping table, the Blanchard's Coffee Roasting Co. team gets dominant notes of dark chocolate balanced with deep caramelized sugars and a pleasant smokey undertone. Dark as Dark is intensely sweet and creamy while also incredibly clean.
Dark as Dark is one of our most popular coffees, partly due to its versatility. It works just as well as a bold morning cup as it does an after dinner digestif. The natural creaminess makes it easy to drink black but becomes almost dessert-like with cream and sugar added. The best brew method for Dark as Dark is a French Press at a 1:15 ratio. This will produce a hearty, oily cup of coffee, which is exactly what Dark as Dark should be.
