Day Six: San Antonio Surprises
The drive from Houston to San Antonio was another windy one, but compared to the stretches ahead, it was relatively short. Our expectations for San Antonio were simple—we knew it had a river walk, and that was about it. Coming from Richmond, where our canal walk is underwhelming at best, we didn’t have high hopes. But San Antonio won us over almost instantly.
After arriving, we walked past the Alamo down to the river, where we took in the city at a slower pace. The river walk was beautiful—lively, full of energy, and far exceeding what we had imagined. We grabbed tacos for lunch, then toured the Alamo, soaking in its history.
By the afternoon, I was craving a little recreation, so I went to hit golf balls while A.C. went for a run. We reunited at Merritt Coffee, and it was exceptional. The staff was excited to hear about our trip, and they even wrote a sweet note on A.C.’s cup—a small but meaningful gesture. Merritt checked every box, from quality to hospitality.
Taking their recommendation for dinner, we went to Best Quality Daughter in the Pearl District, and it was a game-changer. The restaurant’s design was stunning, and the Texan-Chinese fusion food was unlike anything we’d had. It’s the kind of meal that will stay with us for a long time.
San Antonio surprised us in the best way. Like New Orleans, it’s a city we could have spent days in, and I have no doubt we’ll be back.
